I'm not sur to understand your query (sorry i'm french )
But this component provide a direct connexion to database
you can get all names on your database with query, the result of query is an array, and then you can work on this array as you like...

Is it possible to pull a list of names out of your database, make it an array and the search the array to find out if a 'username' exists?

For the purpose of content management and user interaction.
